The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have implemented Mandatory Alcohol Screening (MAS) in the Greater Toronto Area to combat impaired driving, viewing it as a crucial measure. They’ve observed a nearly 30% increase in impaired driving incidents and charges compared to the past five years, with the GTA experiencing the most significant rise in such collisions among OPP regions. The police anticipate this trend will persist into the spring. MAS, adopted in Canada in 2018, empowers officers to request a breath sample without suspicion of alcohol consumption. Drivers are advised to cooperate during traffic stops, as refusal could lead to charges. The OPP emphasizes MAS’s effectiveness, widely recognized and used globally in law enforcement for years.
