Elon Musk, known for his stance on free speech and CEO roles at X (formerly Twitter), Tesla, and SpaceX, is once again sparking debate on the topic of free speech and censorship. Since acquiring X in 2022, Musk has clashed with governments globally over online content regulations. He’s currently entangled in legal battles with Brazil and Australia for their attempts to regulate harmful content, like misinformation and hate speech, which Musk argues suppresses free expression. Critics accuse him of empowering extremists by selectively challenging regulations while complying with takedown requests elsewhere. In Brazil, Musk’s dispute revolves around the handling of online groups linked to former President Bolsonaro, who’s under investigation for spreading fake news and inciting violence. This includes scrutiny of Bolsonaro’s supporters allegedly involved in a coup attempt following his electoral defeat in 2022.
