Speed limits to increase on some sections of Ontario highways

The Ontario government has announced plans to raise the speed limit on certain sections of provincial highways, including Highway 401 and Highway 403. Starting this summer, the speed limit will increase from 100 km/h to 110 km/h on 10 additional highway sections across southern and northern Ontario.

While none of the affected areas are in the Greater Toronto Area, Highway 403 from Brantford to Hamilton and from Woodstock to Brantford are among the identified sections for the speed limit increase. Additionally, a 35-kilometre stretch on Highway 401 from Highway 35/115 to Cobourg will see speed limit changes.

The province attributes the decision to evidence showing that much of Ontario’s highway network was designed to safely accommodate higher speeds. Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria states that the changes aim to make life more convenient for drivers while aligning Ontario’s speed limits with those of other Canadian provinces.

The speed limit adjustments will be implemented on most sections starting July 12, with the remaining changes occurring by the end of the year. Other highway sections slated for speed limit increases include Highway 401 from Tilbury to Belleville, Highway 401 from Belleville to Kingston, Highway 401 from Hwy 16 to the Quebec boundary, Highway 406 from Thorold to Welland, Highway 416 from Hwy 401 to Ottawa, and Highway 69 from Sudbury to French River.
