Alcohol in Toronto parks may become permanent

A trial program in Toronto allowed alcohol consumption in certain parks and may now become permanent. The City’s Economic and Community Development Committee will review a report on extending the program to individuals aged 19 and above in selected green spaces. Final approval from the City Council is expected in April.

The trial, conducted from August to October in 27 parks across 13 wards, received positive feedback. A survey revealed high visitor satisfaction and minimal issues. City staff suggest permanently permitting alcohol in these parks and expanding the program to include one park per ward.

Key criteria for eligible parks include adequate facilities, size, and approval from local councillors. Alcohol consumption is prohibited near certain areas like playgrounds and swimming pools.

The positive survey results indicate growing acceptance of drinking in parks, viewed as normal behavior post-pandemic.
