David Hinojosa, a Hollywood producer of Puerto Rican and Mexican descent, recently secured his first Oscar nomination for co-producing the acclaimed drama “Past Lives.” This nomination marks him as the second American producer with Latino roots to receive recognition in the Best Picture category, following Shaka King’s nomination for “Judas and the Black Messiah” in 2021. Hinojosa collaborated with Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler on “Past Lives,” a film depicting the reunion of two childhood friends after 24 years apart.

Aside from “Past Lives,” Hinojosa’s production credits include “Beatriz at Dinner” (2017) and “Zola” (2020), both directed by Latine filmmakers Miguel Arteta and Janicza Bravo, respectively. Before its Oscar nod, “Past Lives” earned Hinojosa a Gotham Award, and he’s also nominated for an Independent Spirit Award.

Reflecting on “Past Lives,” Hinojosa emphasized its universal appeal and its exploration of choice-making. He currently has three films in post-production as a producer, including “Omni Loop” directed by Bernardo Britto and “The Materialists,” a rom-com starring Pedro Pascal, directed by Celine Song, with whom Hinojosa is collaborating again.
