Haiti is teetering on the brink of civil war, with armed gangs wreaking havoc and the economy and public health system in ruins. Dominican Republic President Luis Abinader warned at the United Nations that his country might seek to protect itself if the international community fails to intervene swiftly. Since the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moise in 2021, the Dominican Republic has been sounding alarms about Haiti’s worsening security crisis. Abinader urged the international community to fulfill its promises of sending a multinational force to bolster Haiti’s security forces. Despite the UN Security Council’s approval for such a force, logistical challenges, legal issues in Kenya, and funding shortages have delayed its deployment. Abinader stressed the urgency, stating that either immediate action is taken, or Haiti’s collapse will be irreversible. He emphasized that the Dominican Republic would strive to prevent being dragged into Haiti’s turmoil. With no elections since 2016 and rampant gang violence, Haiti faces an escalating humanitarian crisis. Tensions between Santo Domingo and Port-au-Prince have heightened due to immigration disputes and border-related issues, exacerbating the fragile situation.
