Uruguay kicked off its 2023-2024 cruise season in Punta del Este, with Tourism Minister Tabaré Viera leading the ceremony. The season is anticipated to welcome 232 cruise ships, highlighting the growing importance of cruise tourism in Uruguay. Minister Viera noted that 74 of these vessels are expected to dock in Punta del Este, making it a key destination. Transport Minister José Luis Falero estimated that approximately 200,000 visitors will disembark from these ships throughout the year, boosting tourism in Punta del Este.

Additionally, Juan Curbelo, head of Uruguay’s National Port Administration (ANP), announced record passenger numbers at Colonia’s riverside port in 2023. Many of these passengers were Uruguayan travelers heading to Argentina to take advantage of favorable exchange rates. The announcement coincided with the unveiling of a $23 million upgrade to Colonia’s port infrastructure, scheduled for completion in late 2024.

The upgrades include the construction of a third fixed gangway, dock expansions, and defenses to accommodate smaller cruise ships. The restoration of Colonia’s historic wooden dock is a significant aspect of the renovation plan. These developments aim to enhance service quality and safety measures, ensuring a seamless travel experience for visitors arriving in Uruguay.
