Lionel Messi expressed his enthusiasm for playing in international games, especially those where fans are eagerly awaiting. Prior to a match in Japan, he expressed hopes of playing in Hong Kong someday. However, his absence in the Hong Kong game sparked controversy, drawing attention to the differential treatment between cities. While the Hong Kong match drew 40,000 spectators paying high ticket prices, the Japan National Stadium had numerous unoccupied seats, with only 28,614 tickets sold. China’s Global Times raised questions about the integrity of Inter Miami and Messi due to his absence in Hong Kong, suggesting it amplified suspicions among fans. Some mainland supporters traveled long distances to see Messi, heightening the disappointment over his absence. Senior Hong Kong government advisor Regina Ip condemned Messi, Inter Miami, and the alleged orchestrators behind the snub. The incident’s impact transcended sports, evoking widespread discontent among fans and government officials. Despite the controversy, Inter Miami concluded its preseason tour, playing Messi’s youth club before commencing MLS regular-season play.
