Pope says he hopes to visit “suffering” Argentina this year

Pope Francis expressed concern for the suffering of the people in Argentina and expressed hope to make his first trip back to his homeland in the second half of the year. This follows an invitation from Argentine President Javier Milei, who had previously criticized the Pope but now seemingly extended an olive branch. Argentina is grappling with a severe economic crisis, and Milei, the current president, has implemented measures to address issues such as triple-digit inflation and rising poverty. Pope Francis mentioned the possibility of a trip after August, following visits to other countries. Milei, a former commentator who once called the Pope an “imbecile,” had engaged in verbal attacks on Francis before becoming president. Despite their previous differences, they spoke on the phone after Milei’s election. This potential trip would mark Pope Francis’ first visit to Argentina in about a decade.
