BARRIO – On Saturday March 25th and 26th there was a clash of futsal royalty at Durham College in Oshawa. On the Saturday, 9 de Ocubre defeated Idolo 8-5, while La Nueva Escuela FC defeated Atletico Sporting Toronto. The following day 9 de Octubre met La Nueva Escuela  in the finals where they won in penalty shoot outs. Now, 9 de Octubre is off to Alberta to represent Ontario in the Nationals.

9 de Octubre futsal team was started by Antonio Siguencia almost 40 years ago. The team was made up of friends and family. Today it’s been taken over by his sons, Joseluis and Christopher (Mechon) Siguencia-Vargas. Nothing much has changed. The team is still made up of friends and family. 9 de Octubre is captained by Matthew Rios. Some of the players on the team play on the Team Canada Futsal Team.

For those who don’t know, the name ‘9 de Octubre’ commemorates the date the city of Guayaquil declared their independence from Spain. The day is celebrated across the country by many.

For now, the 9 de Octubre futsal team is getting ready for the Nationals in Alberta (April 13-16). Playing for the championship will be teams from Quebec, Ontario, Alberta, Yukon, Manitoba, Nunavut, Saskatchewan, and British Colombia. Historically Ontario and Quebec have faired well in this tournament, but the other teams have definitely gotten better.

Quebec has won two of the previous championships, but the boys are confident that they’ll bring this one home. All of Ontario is cheering for them. We certainly are!!
