16 Years Ago, ‘Danza Kuduro’ Was Released — And Latin Parties Were Never the Same

Sixteen years ago, a song dropped that would become almost impossible to escape — and honestly, we’re still not tired of it.

On August 15, 2010, Don Omar and Lucenzo released “Danza Kuduro,” a Spanish-and-Portuguese anthem that became one of the defining Latin party songs of its generation.

The record was bigger than just another reggaeton hit.

“Danza Kuduro” blended reggaeton with kuduro, the high-energy music and dance style with roots in Angola. Lucenzo had previously found success in Europe with “Vem Dançar Kuduro,” before teaming up with Puerto Rican superstar Don Omar for the version that would explode around the world.

And explode it did.

The song reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart and eventually accumulated 15 weeks at the top. At one point, it simultaneously dominated Billboard’s Latin, urban, pop and tropical radio charts.

Its success went far beyond Latin America and the United States. “Danza Kuduro” became a major hit across Europe, reaching No. 1 in countries including Spain, Italy, Germany, Austria and Switzerland. In Italy alone, it reportedly spent 10 consecutive weeks at No. 1.

Then Hollywood gave the song another massive cultural moment.

“Danza Kuduro” was featured at the end of 2011’s Fast Five, connecting the song with one of the biggest movie franchises in the world and introducing it to an even wider international audience.

But perhaps the greatest measure of its significance is what happens today.

Sixteen years later, a DJ can still play those opening seconds at a Latin party almost anywhere in the world and people immediately know what’s coming.

Different countries. Different generations. Spanish speakers, Portuguese speakers and people who probably still have no idea what half the lyrics mean.

It doesn’t matter.

When “Danza Kuduro” comes on, everybody knows what to do.

That’s when a hit becomes an anthem — and 16 years later, Don Omar and Lucenzo’s “Danza Kuduro” has earned its place as one of the most unforgettable Latin party records of the 21st century.
