135-Year-Old Goliath Becomes a Dad: Zoo Miami Celebrates Record-Breaking Galápagos Tortoise

Zoo Miami had double the reason to celebrate this Father’s Day: their beloved Galápagos tortoise, Goliath, not only marked his 135th birthday but also became a dad for the very first time. The nearly 600-pound tortoise welcomed his first hatchling on June 4 with female tortoise Sweet Pea, after years of unsuccessful breeding attempts.

This hatchling is a historic first for Zoo Miami—their first-ever Galápagos tortoise baby. Though Goliath and Sweet Pea won’t have much interaction with their offspring (as is typical in the wild), the hatchling is healthy, energetic, and now settling into its own enclosure.

Goliath, who has lived at Zoo Miami for 43 years after spending 52 years at the Bronx Zoo, may soon find himself in the record books. The zoo has submitted an application to the Guinness World Records to recognize him as “The Oldest First-Time Father in History,” along with Sweet Pea as part of the oldest first-time parent duo.

This isn’t an isolated case of ancient parenting—earlier this year, the Philadelphia Zoo welcomed four Galápagos tortoise hatchlings born to first-time parents “Mommy” and “Abrazzo,” both close to a century old.

Galápagos tortoises, native to Ecuador’s Galápagos Islands, can weigh up to 500 pounds and live over a century. Their eggs incubate for up to eight months, and temperature determines the hatchlings’ sex—lower temps yield females, while higher temps produce males.

With Goliath’s remarkable milestone and the hatchling’s healthy debut, Zoo Miami has plenty to shellebrate.
